About the Planetarium

The Exhibit Museum Planetarium was first installed in 1958. The Planetarium seats 36 people on concentric benches. The dome is one of the few remaining hand-sewn, painted canvas domes in the United States. Each year, thousands of adults and children - as members of school groups, scout groups, and from the general public - attend star talks and Planetarium shows.

  • Each season, the Planetarium offers "The Sky Tonight," a live star talk about the current night sky. Special events are noted, such as comets, meteor showers, and eclipses.
  • Astronomy and space research shows highlight current interests and happenings such as the Hubble Space Telescope, missions to the planets, specific planets, and shows for younger audiences like "Larry Cat in Space."

We are currently upgrading the Planetarium to an all-dome, digital video system, opening in November 2007. This is an expensive endeavor in a time of budget cuts - please see the campaign details (PDF File) on the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts website, and see our Sponsorship Opportunities page if you are interested in helping.
